Women\u2019s\u00a0Aid Patron Melanie Brown has been recognised with\u00a0an MBE in the New Year Honours List for her unwavering commitment to supporting survivors and raising awareness of domestic abuse.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The activist and former Spice Girl joined Women\u2019s Aid in 2018.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Melanie said<\/span><\/b>: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis has taken so long to sink in because it means so much to me – more than anyone will ever know. It\u2019s such mixed emotions. To go through such dark times and then to start coming into the light and speaking out for myself and other women has been at times incredibly painful but also unbelievably empowering. I feel I\u2019m accepting this award on behalf of all women who have gone through \u2014 or going through \u2014 abuse in all its shapes and forms. I am so grateful not just to be a survivor but to have a platform to keep speaking out as Patron of Women\u2019s Aid.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cMelanie has bravely spoken up about her own experiences of abuse, which have\u00a0informed her work as our Patron.\u00a0She has dedicated\u00a0herself\u00a0tirelessly\u00a0to working with the charity,\u00a0spending\u00a0a huge amount of time meeting\u00a0survivors,\u00a0supporting\u00a0public awareness work\u00a0and creating opportunities for raising awareness of domestic abuse.\u00a0Please join us in congratulating Melanie on a truly deserved accolade \u2014 one we know will mean so much to her.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Melanie has given speeches at Women\u2019s Aid events, performed in an incredibly moving classical music video with composer Fabio D\u2019Andrea, which has gone on to create international awareness of domestic\u00a0abuse, and\u00a0helped Women\u2019s Aid establish\u00a0its\u00a0lifesaving Live Chat service. Melanie\u00a0also\u00a0launched an economic abuse report with\u00a0Women\u2019s Aid\u00a0at No 10 Downing St\u00a0by discussing\u00a0her own experience of financial abuse, hosted a fundraising fashion show with fellow Patron Dame Julie Walters, and assisted Women\u2019s Aid in advising Coronation Street on a landmark coercive control storyline.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Notes\u00a0<\/span><\/b>to editors\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An estimated 1.6 million women in England and Wales have experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2020 with young women aged 16-24 years continuing to be the age group at most risk (ONS 2020).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Women\u2019s Aid\u202f<\/span><\/b>is the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. Since 1974 we have been at the forefront of shaping and coordinating responses to domestic abuse, with survivors at the heart of our work. We are a federation of over 170 organisations which provide just under 300 local lifesaving services to women and children across the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
