At a time when domestic abuse was becoming a greater political issue, training became much more closely linked with our political lobbying. We started to deliver training externally and on subject-specific areas, including:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-68843fb elementor-section-stretched elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"68843fb\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;,&quot;stretch_section&quot;:&quot;section-stretched&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-wide\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d62ffba\" data-id=\"d62ffba\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f68c909 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f68c909\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Commissioning a training programme for children\u2019s workers on the back of the Children Act in 1989 and Child Support act in 1991.<\/li><li>Working with London Lighthouse to deliver training on HIV\/Aids.<\/li><li>Training to the police \u2013 an essential part of our work which <a href=\"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/what-we-do\/training\/police-training-domestic-abuse-matters\/\">continues to this day<\/a>.<\/li><li>Training to the Royal College of Midwives.<\/li><\/ul><p>With demand for training only increasing and still with no staff dedicated to training at the time, we eventually received funding for two training staff: a coordinator and administrator. This allowed us to start rolling out a national training programme with a focus on training refuge and outreach workers on issues such as legal protection, homelessness and housing law, welfare benefits and child contact.<\/p><p>In the days before email and with everything still on floppy discs, staff would travel across the country with flipcharts and bundles of photocopied materials they had spent hours printing and stapling together.\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: var(--text-align);\">We developed a high standard of training during these years, but by the early 2000s it became clear we needed something more official. We got to work on an accredited training programme.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a3c1f1e e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"a3c1f1e\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div mid-2000s<\/h2><p>Women\u2019s Aid National Training Centre, as it was known for many years, was officially established in the mid-2000s. With funding from Comic Relief, manager Jacqui Kilburn and trainer Dr Bianca Petkova were able to develop and pilot an accredited qualification; it took around two years from start to finish.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a853e5a elementor-section-stretched elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a853e5a\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;,&quot;stretch_section&quot;:&quot;section-stretched&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-wide\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7dd7165\" data-id=\"7dd7165\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f203804 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f203804\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The initial pilot included 13 units and 52 assignments per person and took place over the course of a year in an old hotel in Durham where Henry VIII had often stayed. Staff remember it being full of character and have many anecdotes to share about flickering lights and doors opening and closing on their own accord.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section Certificate to Diploma level \u2013 the highest credit-based qualification for the sector \u2013 alongside introducing an Award in \u2018tackling and preventing domestic abuse\u2019 for the general public.<\/p><p>We started to deliver training internationally, with trainers working through the night to accommodate time zones and even travelling abroad to the likes of France, Serbia, Georgia and the Isles of Scilly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section With all of our training taking place in person up until that point, staff worked quickly to ensure a smooth transition online.<\/p><p>Within six months, we had started delivering 100% of training remotely, enabling more people to access our courses than ever before. We rebranded to Women\u2019s Aid Training &amp; Education in 2024, which now includes our children and young people team who have trained thousands of teachers and young people to-date.<\/p><p>Our core feminist, survivor-led principles are the same as they always have been. But as culture, research and policy shifts, we recognise the need to evolve and adapt so that our training reflects the changing world we live in. It is why we redeveloped our <a href=\"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/what-we-do\/training\/facilitator-training\/power-to-change-facilitation-programme\/\">Power of Change group programme<\/a> after the pandemic and why <a href=\"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/what-we-do\/training\/police-training-domestic-abuse-matters\/\">DA Matters<\/a> now includes coercive control.<\/p><p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">While awareness of domestic abuse has increased over the past 50 years, we know there is much work to be done. We<\/span> will continue to expand our training offering based on our members\u2019 needs, increase access to training through the creation of more digital learning opportunities, and build on our corporate training.
