Women’s Aid responds to Sentencing Act receiving Royal Assent<\/span><\/h1>\n

Farah Nazeer, Chief Executive of Women’s Aid, comments:<\/p>\n

“We are pleased to see the introduction of a judicial finding for domestic abuse introduced by the Sentencing Act, which received Royal Assent this week. The indicator is a welcome measure, which will begin to address the gaps in data for perpetrators past the point of conviction. However, we continue to call for sentencing that adequately reflects the harm of these crimes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We welcome provisions to strengthen community sentences, such as electronic monitoring and restriction zones.\u00a0While\u00a0we understand the\u00a0need\u00a0to address prison overcrowding and ensure the safety of the prison population and prison officers,\u00a0we\u00a0remain\u00a0extremely concerned about the impact that the recall provisions will have on survivors of domestic abuse.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perpetrators of domestic abuse are often repeat offenders\u00a0who\u00a0pose\u00a0serious\u00a0threats\u00a0to their victims\u00a0beyond prison release;\u00a0re-releasing prisoners\u00a0back into the community\u00a0without having conducted a risk-assessment,\u00a0puts survivors\u00a0in danger\u00a0and is in direct contradiction to the Government\u2019s mission to halve violence against women and girls.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We welcome investment in probation services, as we know that these services have been significantly under-resourced and are failing survivors. We continue to call for life-saving specialist services to be consulted as part of Multi-agency public protection arrangements (MAPPA) and for this process to be undertaken pre-release for every inmate with a judicial finding of domestic abuse. “<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
