Women’s Aid responds to an investigation by The Guardian into suicides linked to domestic abuse<\/h1>\n

This week, The Guardian published an investigation which revealed that the number of suicides linked to domestic abuse was being vastly underreported, with up to 1,500 victims each year.<\/p>\n

Sarah Davidge, Head of\u00a0Membership, Research and Evaluation\u00a0at Women\u2019s Aid, comments:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Domestic abuse has a devastating impact on the mental health and wellbeing of survivors.<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span><\/i>These new findings are a shocking insight into the reality for so many families who are\u00a0left\u00a0bereaved of mothers,\u00a0daughters\u00a0and sisters\u00a0as a result of\u00a0domestic abuse, but are too often denied justice because their death was not\u00a0considered to be\u00a0directly at the hands of their perpetrator.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We know from The Domestic Homicide project,\u00a0that the majority of\u00a0Suspected Victim Suicides after Domestic Abuse victims (SVSDA)\u00a0from an intimate\u00a0partner\u00a0were\u00a0also identified as having a history of coercive and controlling\u00a0behaviour within these relationships.\u00a0The figures today show that the extent of the official figures significantly\u00a0underpresent\u00a0the reality behind the impact of\u00a0domestic abuse.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

It is imperative that\u00a0understanding of the nature and impact of coercive and controlling behaviour is improved across all agencies that\u00a0come into contact with\u00a0survivors, through training like that offered by Women\u2019s\u00a0Aid.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

With\u00a0cases against perpetrators all\u00a0too\u00a0often\u00a0dropped\u00a0after\u00a0death by suicide, grieving families are failed by the justice system\u00a0and\u00a0perpetrators\u00a0do not face justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

We must do better to protect women and children from their abusers and to help them believe their voices will be heard, before they feel like it is too late.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
