{"id":49467,"date":"2026-02-24T10:48:35","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T10:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/?p=49467"},"modified":"2026-02-24T10:52:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T10:52:16","slug":"shame-has-to-change-sides-a-parliamentary-reception-for-gisele-pelicot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/shame-has-to-change-sides-a-parliamentary-reception-for-gisele-pelicot\/","title":{"rendered":"Shame Has to Change Sides: A Parliamentary Reception for Gis\u00e8le Pelicot"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Shame Has to Change Sides: A Parliamentary Reception for Gis\u00e8le Pelicot<\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gis\u00e8le\u00a0Pelicot\u00a0inspired and moved millions of people when she chose to waive\u00a0her right to\u00a0anonymity in\u00a0the trial of her ex-husband and the fifty other men eventually convicted of her sexual assault.\u00a0Her call for shame to change sides in cases of violence against women has raised awareness of the devastating impact of these\u00a0crimes, and\u00a0invigorated the global\u00a0movement\u00a0for change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In celebration of the global publication of\u00a0Gis\u00e8le\u00a0Pelicot&#8217;s\u00a0memoir,<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0A Hymn to Life,<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0during her visit to the UK,\u00a0Women\u2019s Aid and\u00a0her\u00a0publisher, Vintage,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">part of Penguin Random House UK,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">proudly co-hosted an event in the Houses of Parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gis\u00e8le Pelicot\u2019s book is a powerful and searing reminder that domestic abuse and sexual assault can happen to anyone. Data shows that nearly a third of women experience domestic abuse, with 1 in 4 also experiencing sexual assault. For many women sexual assault is part of the abuse they experience at the hands of their husband or partner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gis\u00e8le Pelicot\u2018s message is one of defiance and renewal \u2013 that victims have no reason to feel ashamed; that even after unimaginable betrayal we can go on; that the colour can come back to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gis\u00e8le Pelicot addressed a captivated room, including government ministers and Members of Parliament, survivors, and advocates to end violence against women and children. Some of those in attendance included Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Jess Phillips, Minister for Victims and Tackling VAWG Alex Davies-Jones, broadcaster Victoria Derbyshire, Women\u2019s Aid ambassadors Michelle Griffith-Robinson, Ashley James, Katie Piper and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gis\u00e8le Pelicot said:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018It is an honour to speak\u00a0in\u00a0the Houses of Parliament today, a building where many laws are made. \u00a0Changing legislation is far easier than changing attitudes.\u00a0For victims to speak out, society also\u00a0has to\u00a0be ready to listen\u00a0and to hold their hand. \u00a0Shame must change sides.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Speaking\u00a0alongside Gis\u00e8le\u00a0Pelicot, Farah Nazeer,\u00a0CEO at Women\u2019s Aid\u00a0said:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018I would like to express my personal thanks to\u00a0Gis\u00e8le for her outstanding bravery, unflinching\u00a0honesty\u00a0and pursuit of justice. By holding the men who committed these crimes against her\u00a0to account,\u00a0she has given countless women a voice, making them feel seen, heard and no longer alone. We know from our work with survivors just how isolating and insidious violence against women and\u00a0girls\u00a0is,\u00a0as well as how deeply rooted it is in misogyny.
