{"id":49912,"date":"2026-04-22T09:52:42","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T08:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/?p=49912"},"modified":"2026-04-22T09:52:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T08:52:42","slug":"womens-aid-responds-to-the-victims-commissioners-formal-complaint-following-an-evidence-session-in-westminster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/womens-aid-responds-to-the-victims-commissioners-formal-complaint-following-an-evidence-session-in-westminster\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s Aid responds to the Victims\u2019 Commissioner&#8217;s formal complaint following an evidence session in Westminster"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Women&#8217;s Aid responds to the Victims\u2019 Commissioner&#8217;s formal complaint following an evidence session in Westminster<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Farah Nazeer, Chief Executive of Women\u2019s Aid, comments:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHaving been witness to the recent evidence session given in Parliament with the aim of informing and shaping\u00a0the Courts and Tribunals Bill, I was left feeling disappointed\u00a0on behalf of survivors.\u00a0Of course,\u00a0parliamentary\u00a0debate,\u00a0robust questioning and evidence gathering is\u00a0absolutely essential\u00a0when it comes\u00a0to informing legislation, yet\u00a0receiving\u00a0testimony and evidence\u00a0on this subject, with survivors\u00a0present\u00a0in the room,\u00a0requires a different and trauma-informed approach.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSurvivor voices and experiences are\u00a0absolutely essential\u00a0if we are to create a criminal justice system that is survivor-centred\u00a0and delivers the justice it promises.\u00a0However, when survivor evidence is\u00a0given\u00a0it must be received with care, compassion and\u00a0above all, respect. I felt that the evidence sessions I attended\u00a0did\u00a0not consistently achieve these standards of care,\u00a0leaving survivors feeling disheartened and in some cases, retraumatised.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I urge the\u00a0parliamentarians\u00a0to ensure that all those who work with, and engage with survivors,\u00a0receive specialist training, to understand the impact that crimes like domestic abuse have on women and children, and how discussing these experiences\u00a0can\u00a0make them feel. Survivor voices are invaluable and must be treated with the care and respect that their bravery deserves.\u201d<\/span><span
