This legislation\u00a0makes some\u00a0important changes\u00a0that survivors of domestic abuse\u00a0and other forms of violence against women and girls (VAWG)\u00a0have long called for.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe know from our work with survivors that\u00a0many\u00a0women and children have been let down by the\u00a0complex\u00a0criminal justice system which, for too long, has failed to recognise and prioritise their needs.\u00a0This is especially the case for marginalised survivors, who face\u00a0significant barriers to seeking justice and\u00a0further\u00a0prejudice in the systems intended to bring them justice.\u00a0The failures have been so extensive and the lack of\u00a0understanding\u00a0of the complexities\u00a0are so\u00a0profound, that less than\u00a01 in 5 women feel able to report their experiences to the police.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe government has committed to halving violence against women and girls in the next decade\u00a0and this Bill is promising significant improvements. We are pleased to see that victims and bereaved families will now have longer to challenge unduly lenient sentences, giving grieving families the opportunity to make decisions without undue pressure. We are also pleased to see that non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) will no longer be exploited to cover up criminal conduct.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe also welcome new limitations to parental responsibility for\u00a0perpetrators, though this needs to go further.\u00a0Parents who perpetrate violence against women and children pose a clear and significant risk of harm to their children in multiple forms. It is a narrow and insufficient approach to treat child sexual offences as the only threshold for restricting parental responsibility.\u00a0We are looking forward to new laws\u00a0committed to by the Government in October\u00a0that remove the presumption of support for parental contact where there is domestic\u00a0abuse and\u00a0the child does not want to see a parent, or it is unsafe for them to do so.\u00a0We know from our years of research on child homicides, that\u00a0without this change children will continue to die\u00a0as a result of\u00a0unsafe contact.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cImprovements for survivors\u00a0who are in the justice system or considering reporting to the police,\u00a0are not just about legislation but also about\u00a0the resourcing\u00a0of\u00a0high-quality\u00a0specialist\u00a0services.
